Kathmandu: The bypolls in Ilam-2 for a lower house seat and Bajhang (A) for Sudur Paschim Provincial assembly seat concluded peacefully on Saturday, according to the Election Commission.

The bypolls witnessed a voter turnout of 57 percent in Ilam, while the turnout in Bajhang stood at around 50 percent.

In Ilam-2, a total of 115,889 individuals were eligible to cast votes, but only 66,000 voters participated on Saturday, informed Chief District Officer Indra Dev Yadav.

Meanwhile, in Bajhang (A), out of the total 61,748 eligible voters, only 26,180 people cast their votes across 74 polling stations in the constituency, stated Chief Election Officer Sudarshan Lamichhane.

The Ilam-2 House of Representatives seat became vacant following the passing of former Speaker and Constituent Assembly chairman Subas Chandra Nembang. He succumbed to a heart attack in September last year. Nembang  had consistently secured victory in the constituency since the 1999 general elections.

Similarly, the by-election in the Bajhang (A) constituency was held to fill the seat in the Sudurpaschim Assembly, which remained vacant after the demise of Prithvi Bahadur Singh, a provincial assembly member and the provincial minister for internal affairs and law. Singh lost his life in a road accident in June last year.

In Ilam, the counting is scheduled to begin from 11 PM, while in Bajhang, it will start from 10 AM on Sunday, the EC said.
