US ambassador to Nepal lauds Urmila Chaudhary for fighting systemic racism

Kathmandu: US ambassador to Nepal Dean R Thomson has praised Urmila Chaudhary for her role in helping the cause of emancipation of Kamlaris—the bonded female laborers from Nepal’s western and far-western region—and for her fight against racial discrimination.

Urmila Chaudhary, who has been fighting tirelessly for human rights and end of caste-based discrimination in Nepal, was awarded 2024 Global Anti-Racism Champion (GARC) by the US Department of State last month.

“It was a great pleasure welcoming Urmila Chaudhary back to Nepal following her visit to the United States to be recognized as one of the US Department of State’s 2024 Global Anti-Racism Champions,” ambassador Thomson wrote on social media. “She’s an inspirational and tireless advocate for former bonded laborers and indigenous communities in Nepal. People like Urmila are helping combat systemic racism and discrimination and we are immensely proud to support leaders like her, whose work drives progress and empowers marginalized communities,” he said.
