Kathmandu: Political leaders from Nepal—from president Ram Chandra Paudel to Prime Minister KP Sharma as well as leaders from various ruling and opposition political parties—extended their condolences on the demise of Dr Manmohan Singh by posting messages on social media.
Manmohan Singh, who served two terms as Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, passed away on Thursday night. He was 92.
“We are profoundly saddened by the passing away of former Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh,” Ram Chandra Paudel, president of Nepal wrote. “Dr. Singh was a visionary leader of India. I extend our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the Government and people of India as well as the bereaved family members.”
Likewise, Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli recalled Dr Singh as a visionary leader with wisdom. “Deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh, former PM of India,” he wrote. “A visionary leader, his wisdom, humility, and dedication shaped India and inspired the region. Nepal will forever remember his support for democracy and lasting friendship.”
Former PM and president of Nepal Sher Bahadur Deuba said in Dr Singh’s demise Nepal lost a good friend. “I am deeply saddened by the demise of Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India. In his demise, we have lost a good friend of Nepal,” he wrote. “I extend heartfelt condolences to the government and people of India as well as bereaved family members. May his departed soul rest in peace!”
Pushpa Kamal Dahal, leader of opposition party Maoist Center, said Dr Singh’s legacy will inspire generations. “Deeply saddened by the demise of Dr. Manmohan Singh, a visionary leader and an extraordinary statesman,” he wrote. “My heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of India. His legacy will inspire generations.”
Similarly former Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai said Nepal has lost a great friend, India has lost a pioneer economic reformer and the world has lost an outstanding economist and a good human being. “I have personally lost a sincere and reliable friend. He was an epitome of intellect, integrity and delivery; a rare breed of politicians in the contemporary times. My heartfelt tributes to him and deep condolences to his near and dear ones,” Dr Bhattarai wrote.
Various other political leaders have expressed their condolences on the demise of Dr Singh.
Dr Singh had once said about Nepal, while the country was under Indian blockade in February, 2016: “Nepal is our closest neighbor and we must make every effort to ensure that as a small neighbor we attend to their perceptions. Even when they are wrong, we have an obligation to create an environment in which the common people in Nepal feel that in India they have a great friend.” He further said: “If India did feel there was a problem with the constitution, the government should have quietly told the Nepalis what they felt and talked to them and persuaded them.”
