‘Short movie has opened new doors for directors’

Kathmandu: Nepali film directors have said that short films opened new doors for the Nepali movie sector.

Speaking at a panel discussion organized at the 8th Nepal International Film Festival at Nepal Tourism Board, the filmmakers questioned whether short films have now become a tool to move toward a big feature film.

Director Acharya Gopal said that short film had a different image few years back. But now, short film is gaining good reputation. These movies can be a medium to change the age old malpractices and superstitions prevailing in the society. Right film always gets the right audience.”

Similarly, the Director of Nepali movie ‘Notebook’, Sarita Sah, highlighted that short filmmakers in foreign countries earn handsome money by making short films. “It is difficult to survive in Nepal. Hence, filmmakers jump to feature films even if it turns out to be a flop. That money can be later utilized to make another movie.”

Another notable personality, Aashuka Aryal also shed light at the difficulty in finding producers for short movies. “We need to expand our vision regarding short film and make an initiative to screen short movies in big screen too.”

“Short film and feature film have two different kind of audience. It is difficult to find audience for short film. Feature film has a different hype. Everyone watches movies on screen. I had uploaded one short film in 2019 and have been getting regular work because of the short film,” said Director Sajila Shrestha.
