Rastriya Swatantra Party not to join new political alliance of Congress-UML

Kathmandu: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has decided not to join the new political alliance of the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML.

Speaking to journalists after the party’s secretariat meeting, Santosh Pariyar, the Chief Whip of the party, said that the Rastriya Swatantra Party will recall its ministers from the government as soon as the process to form a new government begins.

Pariyar said that this alliance is not in the country’s best interest, and is unlikely to provide political stability. “The two major powers together in the government do not align with democratic principles.”

In the current government, the Rastriya Swatantra Party holds four ministerial positions, including a deputy prime minister position.

On Monday, in a new twist of political events, the two largest parties in parliament—the Nepali Congress and the CPN (UML)—decided to form a new alliance, with the latter’s chair, KP Sharma Oli, leading the government.
