‘Nepal should ensure good governance, free press and fundamental rights,’ US Embassy

The statement by the Embassy comes in the wake of the arrest of Kailash Sirohiya, the chair of Kantipur Media Group, on Tuesday.

Kathmandu: The US Embassy in Kathmandu has stated that Nepal should have a meaningful dialogue to ensure good governance, free press and fundamental rights.

The statement by the Embassy comes in the wake of the arrest of Kailash Sirohiya, the chair of Kantipur Media Group, on Tuesday.

“Freedom of press, accountability, and transparency are guiding principles for the United States as we continue to work towards “a more perfect union,” said the US Embassy in its statement issued on Wednesday. “We expect that as Nepal continues to shape its hard-won democracy, the Government and people of Nepal will also have a meaningful dialogue about how to ensure good governance, freedom of the press, and people’s fundamental rights.”

Nepal Police on Tuesday arrested Sirohiya on charge of citizenship forgery. Political leaders from various spectrum, civil society and professionals have lambasted Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane for waging vendetta against Sirohiya for reporting the cooperatives funds misuse scams.
