Kathmandu: The Government of Nepal requested international non-governmental organizations and development partners operating in Nepal for enhanced support in providing humanitarian assistance for communities affected by flooding and landslides.
Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizen, Nawalkishor Sah Sudi, on Sunday said the people who survived the landslides and floods wreaked by the rains in different districts including Kathmandu are in the dire need of humanitarian support.
Minister Sudi, also the chairperson of the Social Welfare Council, called an emergency meeting at the council on Sunday and urged the INGOs to extend assistance, considering the urgency to provide Immediate humanitarian assistance to affected people.
Nepal experienced incessant rainfall from 26 September (Thursday), resulting in widespread floods in the many parts of the country. The death toll from floods and landslides, induced by the torrential rain, has risen to 148, with 59 people still missing as of Sunday evening.
The flooding and landslides have wreaked havoc in many parts of the country, with many highways and road stretches disrupted, dozens of houses and bridges buried or swept away, and hundreds of families displaced.
“Nepal is bearing the brunt of landslides, floods and inundations. Details on total loss of lives and damage of property are awaited,” he said, adding the government was making all-out efforts for search, rescue and rehabilitation activities with the mobilization of security persons.
He also urged the international nongovernment organizations to devote efforts in rescue and relief distribution works.
The Council issued a notice and expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and damages of propriety, and requested all sides concerned to extend support in rescue and rehabilitation campaigns from their respective places.
Chairman of Association of International INGO (AIN) Shankar Prasad Kalaunee informed that the stakeholders made plans on how they could extend support at this hour of pressing need.
