Nepal floods 2024: International community mourns for Nepal

Embassies of the UK, US, Australia, Finland, Norway and France among others expressed their solidarity and sorrow with Nepal by posting messages on social media.

Kathmandu: Diplomatic missions of European and American countries sent messages of condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the devastating floods of Saturday and Sunday. They also pledged to support the victims.

From the UK, a labor MP and Nepal envoy expressed sorrow over the rain-induced tragedy.

Catherine West, who is Labour MP for Hornsey & Friern Barnet and Parliamentary Under-Secretary in the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office of the UK, wrote: “My thoughts are with all those impacted by the devastating floods and landslides in Nepal this weekend.” “We are in touch with the Government of Nepal and partners on how best the UK can aid efforts to ensure support continues to reach those most in need.”

Rob Fenn, British ambassador to Nepal, expressed sorrow over the death of people and said the UK is ready to support Nepal. “My heart goes out to the families of those who have lost their loved ones,” he said. He also said that as Nepal’s oldest friend, “UK stands ready to provide support if needed.”

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this weekend’s floods across Nepal. We extend our condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and we stand ready to support a swift and safe recovery to those impacted, the US embassy in Kathmandu said.

Embassy of Finland expressed its solidarity with Nepal following the disastrous floods and landslides across the country. “We extend our deepest condolences to the affected families and stand with Nepal during this challenging time,” the embassy said.

Similarly, Leann Johnston, Australian ambassador to Nepal, expressed her heartfelt condolences to the people and government of Nepal and also informed that Australian embassy’s flag has been lowered to half-mast for the 3 days of mourning.

Ambassador of Norway to Nepal Torum Dramdal wrote: “My thoughts are with all affected by this weekend’s floods and landslides across Nepal – those who have lost their homes, their belongings, their loved ones. I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to all affected families.”

French embassy in Kathmandu said: “Our thoughts are with the families affected by the tragic floods and landslides across Nepal.” “France stands in solidarity with Nepal.”

Floods and landslides on Saturday and Sunday resulted in the death of over 200 apart from inflicting widespread destruction, causing property damage worth billions of rupees.
