Massive demonstration in Kathmandu in favor of restoration of monarchy

Kathmandu: Kathmandu saw probably the largest demonstration in favor of reinstatement of monarchy on Sunday. At a time, frustration with major political parties is growing, thousands of people staged a rally from Tribhuvan International Airport, along the ring road, welcoming former king Gyanendra Shah, who was returning to Kathmandu from Pokhara.

Supporters chanted the slogans ‘come king, save the country’ and ‘our king, our nation, dearer than our hearts,’ among others.

The House of Representatives, reinstated by king Gyanendra in 2006, had voted to abolish monarchy in December, 2007. The first meeting of the Constituent Assembly in 2008 announced abolition of monarchy and declared Nepal a republic.
