Hikmat Karki, chief minister of Koshi, secures vote of confidence

Karki received 57 votes in his favor out of the 93-member provincial assembly. Nepali Congress boycotts the meeting.

Kathmandu: Hikmat Karki, the chief minister of Koshi Province, secured a vote of confidence in the provincial assembly on Monday.

Karki received 57 votes in his favor out of the 93-member provincial assembly. However, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), holding five seats in the Province Assembly, remained neutral.

The opposition party, Nepali Congress, boycotted today’s Province Assembly meeting. A total of 62 lawmakers were present in the meeting.

The Nepali Congress boycotted the meeting because the outgoing chief minister, Kedar Karki, has moved to court, challenging Hikmat Karki’s appointment as the new chief minister.

Last week, Province Head Parshuram Khapung appointed Hikmat Karki as the chief minister after he staked his claim to the post with the support of 52 lawmakers.

This marks Karki’s third stint in the position within just 17 months, as Koshi Province has seen a tumultuous political landscape since the 2022 election.
