Government sacks Kulman Ghising

Ghising’s abrupt dismissal comes amid ongoing tensions with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Deepak Khadka

Kathmandu: In a surprising turn of events, the government has removed Kulman Ghising from his position as the Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), a decision that has drawn immediate criticism from the public and opposition leaders alike.

Ghising’s abrupt dismissal comes amid ongoing tensions with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Deepak Khadka, reportedly over the collection of electricity dues from industries that consumed power through dedicated feeders and trunk lines during Nepal’s peak load-shedding era.

Over the past few months, the Ministry of Energy had sought multiple clarifications from Ghising, citing his failure to recover outstanding dues from industrial consumers and concerns over his management of performance evaluations.

Despite widespread recognition for transforming the NEA into a profitable and efficient entity, his tenure had grown increasingly fraught with friction with the Oli-led government.
