Deepak Manange arrested from Kathmandu

Kathmandu: Nepali Police have arrested Rajiv Gurung, widely known as Deepak Manange, a member of the Gandaki Provincial Assembly and former minister, following a Supreme Court verdict that found him guilty of attempted murder.

The arrest took place on Tuesday in Kathmandu, and he is set to appear before the Kathmandu District Court.

The verdict pertains to a 2004 incident in which Manange, who is known for his criminal background, attacked a rival gang leader, Milan Gurung (alias Milan Chakre), with a sword, causing severe injuries to Gurung’s hand.

In the years since the incident, Manange has risen to prominence in Nepali politics. First elected as an independent representative for the remote district of Manang in 2017, he secured a seat in the Gandaki Provincial Assembly.

Despite his controversial history, he won re-election in 2022. His political ascent, however, has been clouded by his criminal record, leading to previous imprisonment in April 2018 after serving two years of his sentence.
