Kathmandu:  Accountability Watch Committee (AWC) has expressed deep concern over the violent, anarchic, and uncontrolled nature of the protests led by pro-monarchy groups demanding the reinstatement of the monarchy, which have resulted in significant harm to lives and property. “We strongly condemn and denounce acts such as setting fire to private homes and shops, killing journalist Suresh Rajak and ordinary citizen Sabin Maharjan, and putting countless others at risk,” the AWC said in its statement.

Vandalizing and arson attacks on private residences, media houses, political party offices, pharmaceutical companies, vehicles, and sensitive areas around the airport do not fall within the right to peaceful protest. No one has the right to engage in such criminal acts. Even in armed conflicts and wars, international human rights laws prohibit harm to civilians and their properties, the AWC said.

“We strongly demand an immediate investigation into these reprehensible violent acts and that all individuals involved and responsible be brought to justice.”

The AWC has called upon protesting groups and parties to exercise a high degree of restraint and ensure that demonstrations remain peaceful and constructive. “Furthermore, we urge local administration and Nepal Police to adhere strictly to the legal principle that any use of force must be necessary and proportionate.” It has called upon the government agencies concerned of Nepal to take necessary precautions to prevent further loss of life and property and to ensure appropriate medical treatment for those injured in violent clashes.
