Mamata Pant Mishra is a familiar name among Sydney-based Nepali writers and readers. She has frequently shared her crisp poetry on social media. However, despite her established presence, her debut novel, “A New Dawn,” released in 2018, seems to have not yet received the widespread attention it deserves.
This intriguing novel is a blend of drama set in both Nepal and Australia. It begins with a social drama outlook but gradually introduces elements of unsolved crime mystery, dreams, and the supernatural, captivating readers with its characters, events, and storyline. Comprising 20 chapters, the novel portrays main characters Jara, Roan, Lucy, and Dev, each displaying different shades of human emotions and nature, including love and temptation, desire and betrayal, joy and depression, a desire for freedom and justice, crime, revenge, and redemption.
The novel primarily aims to depict the struggles of single parents, especially single women, showcasing how they cope with separation and divorce, and the costs they incur. It endeavours to establish the notion that despite life’s challenges, hope remains essential, and second chances are opportunities one should not fear.
The author has skillfully interwoven a subplot depicting the friendship and ties between Jara and Lucy, adding a strong sense of mystery and curiosity that progresses alongside the main storyline. The sub-plot fills in the missing pieces of the puzzle in Jara and Lucy’s life, satisfying the questions raised in readers’ minds.
In her preface, Mamata explains that while the story is fictional, it draws from her observations and experiences. Life, she asserts, can be unpredictable, stirring chaos, frustration, depression, and feelings of unworthiness, yet it remains beautiful when surrounded by positive and caring individuals who make one feel special.
As Mamata embarks on her literary journey, I hoped that she will continue to be surrounded by supportive individuals, enabling her to contribute further to Nepali-Australian literature through the publication of more novels and poetry.
