Kathmandu: The Election Commission has approved the schedule for the election to the member of House of Representatives to be held on March 5, 2026. The EC said that according to the approved schedule, the programme for the registration of political parties for election purpose is scheduled from November 17 to 26.
Commission’s Secretary and Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said the Election Officer’s office will be established from January 16 for the first-past-the-post election system. Similarly, election campaigning will take place from February 15 to March 2, and after that period campaigning will be prohibited. Voting will be held on March 5 from 7 am to 5 pm, and counting of votes will begin after the ballot boxes for both electoral systems are collected.
According to the EC, the Office of the Election Officer will be established on December 1, 2025 for the proportional election system, and the programme to submit the closed list of proportional candidates is scheduled for January 2 and 3, 2026. It is stated that the Commission will hold consultations and discussions from time to time according to the approved election schedule for coordination and cooperation with political parties and stakeholders in the election. The Election Commission has stated that as per legal provisions since only political parties that are registered with the commission can register for election purposes, stakeholders wishing to participate in the election must have obtained the political party registration certificate by the upcoming November 16.
