Kathmandu: In a historic development, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has been appointed as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal, becoming the first woman to ever hold the country’s top executive post. As per Article 61 of the Constitution of Nepal, Karki has been appointed as the head of the interim government.
Karki’s appointment comes at a time of widespread political turmoil, triggered by youth-led protests that began over a social media ban but soon escalated into a nationwide movement against corruption and poor governance.
A respected figure in Nepal’s judiciary, Karki had earlier served as the country’s first female Chief Justice from 2016 to 2017.
