Kathmandu: In the first of its kind case in Nepal, a former Prime Minister has been charged of corruption by Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA)—the country’s anti-corruption watchdog which often faces the allegations of sparing high-level politicians in its corruption investigation.

None of politicians who served as the PMs in the past have had to be investigated on corruption charges though accusations of their involvement in corruption cases often surface.

Madhav Kumar Nepal, Former Prime Minister and CPN (Unified Socialist) chair, has been charged with corruption in connection with the Patanjali land scam. CIAA filed corruption case against him, along with many others, at the Special Court on Thursday.

CIAA claims that Nepal authorizing decisions in 2010, when he was the PM, to approve land acquisition for Patanjali, an Indian multinational conglomerate founded by Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna, caused a loss of Rs 185.85 million to the state coffer.

Apart from Nepal, many others including ministers and government officials of that time, have been charged of corruption by CIAA.
