Kathmandu: The coalition government of CPN-UML and Nepali Congress has begun to use force to control the pro-monarchy demonstration that is going on, again, in Kathmandu for the last three days. The forces supporting restoration of monarchy—Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (Nepal), among others—resumed their Kathmandu centric protest on Thursday to ‘overthrow’ republic and restore monarchy and Hindu state in Nepal.
This is the second round of Kathmandu centered protest after the March 28 protest during which two individuals were killed as the protest turned violent.
Thursday’s demonstration was peaceful though violent incidents were feared after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli ordered his party cadres to take Kathmandu under control and subdue the pro-monarchy demonstrations. PM Oli was widely criticized by human rights organizations, including the National Human Rights Commission, for issuing a call that could incite violence.
Supporters of monarchy have vowed to intensify protests in the days to come too.
