KATHMANDU: The government has appointed Deepak Thapa as the new Inspector General of Nepal Police.

A Cabinet meeting on Monday decided to promote Thapa to the top post of Nepal Police, according to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.

Thapa replaces Basanta Bahadur Kunwar, whose tenure as IGP ended on Monday.

Thapa began his career in the Nepal Police as an Inspector in 1995. Over the years, he steadily climbed the ranks—being promoted to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in 2006, Superintendent of Police (SP) in 2015, and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in 2019. He reached the position of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in July 2022 before being promoted to Additional Inspector General (AIG) in March 2023.

Thapa holds an LLB degree in law, an MA in political science, and an MPA in public administration.

Before being appointed IGP, Thapa served as the AIG of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) and held key leadership positions at the Nepal Police Headquarters, including the Management Directorate, Administration Department, and the Kathmandu Valley Police Office.
