Nepalgunj: The District Security Committee in Banke district has called for urgent reforms in the juvenile correction system after repeated incidents of children escaping from the correction center. Concerns were raised during a committee meeting on Wednesday, highlighting the need for systemic improvements including reforms of legal measures.
Presided over by Chief District Officer (CDO) Khagendra Prasad Rijal, the meeting emphasized that housing older juvenile offenders alongside younger ones was contributing to a rise in criminal activities.
The committee recommended departmental action following the escape of three juveniles on November 11.
CDO Rijal noted that security personnel face significant challenges due to legal restrictions prohibiting them from carrying arms or wearing uniforms in juvenile correction centers, which compromises their ability to maintain order.
According to the District Police Office, nine of the 12 inmates at the correction center have escaped, with three still unaccounted for since the earlier breakout. The committee stressed the urgency of addressing these issues to ensure better management and safety within juvenile correction facilities.
