Breaking: Arrest warrant issued against Rabi Lamichhane

A parliamentary probe panel formed to investigate cooperatives scam had recommended action against former deputy prime minister and home minister Rabi Lamichhane, among others.

Kathmandu: The Kaski District Court on Sunday issued an arrest warrant against former Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamicchhane on the charge of embezzling cooperative funds.

A single bench of Judge Krishna Jung Shah issued the arrest warrant against Lamichhane, who is also the chair of the Rashtriya Swatantra Party, for his alleged involvement in illegally bringing in hundreds of millions of rupees from cooperatives during his tenure as the managing director of Gorkha Media Network.

Earlier today, police arrested Chhabilal Joshi, former deputy inspector general of Nepal Police, on the same charge.

Following the arrest warrant, a huge number of police have been deployed to apprehend Lamichhane from his residence in Bhaktapur.

A parliamentary probe panel formed to investigate cooperatives scam had recommended action against Joshi, Gorkha Media Network chairman GB Rai, then managing director Rabi Lamichhane, and Kumar Ramtel, a director of the same company, in embezzlement of cooperatives funds.

The probe committee, led by CPN-UML lawmaker Surya Thapa, had recommended the government investigate the four individuals on money laundering. The committee’s report was published on the House of Representatives’ website on Friday.

Lamichhane has been saying that he has no role in the cooperatives fraud scam and that he is innocent.

Earlier today, Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police arrested Durga Prasai, a medical entrepreneur with a controversial track record, from his home in Bhaktapur.
