Youth participation in politics is an important aspect of functional democracy. It is equally important in building a dynamic society. Needless to say that young people generally bring new perspectives and innovative ideas.
Political participation of youth groups in politics should not be limited to formality. Youth people must come up with new ideas and solutions to the problems. Youth spirit and energy must be utilized to challenge the status quo to ensure positive transformation in the society.
While youth participation in politics has been a cliche among politicians, it, however, should not be limited in tokenism. Meaningful participation of youth groups in politics also requires their participation in policy making.
Comparatively, youth groups not only bring innovative ideas in politics, but also support to ensure that policies reflect the long-term interests of society. Young people can advocate for issues such as education, employment and climate change.
It is, however, a reality that youth people are not much attracted toward politics. Many youths think that politics is not their cup of tea. Youths often express their frustration over bad governance and tend to complain about the ineffective working style of politicians. Now is the time to change this perception.
In reality, politics is everywhere. Thus, youth groups should not shy away from entering into politics. Youth participation in politics can promote politically active and engaged citizenry, which is a bedrock to promote democratic values and principles in any society.
Equally important aspect is diversity and inclusion. In a country like Nepal, attention should be paid on motivating youths from diverse backgrounds into politics.
Of late, the methods of engagement have changed. Social media and other digital platforms have emerged as powerful tools to interact with people from different backgrounds. Personally, I believe youth groups should utilize this advancement to enhance their influence in politics. Youths who are adept at using digital tools and social media platforms can be champions of political mobilization, advocacy and communication.
In my opinion, youth groups should constructively demand their participation in politics. A lot of challenges remain with regard to involving youths in the decision making process. Young people may face significant barriers to political participation, including lack of resources, experience, and representation in political parties. Overcoming these challenges requires a strong determination and passion.
Some youths have set a new standard with regard to fighting for their participation. Let us take an example of Greta Thunberg. Due to her continued involvement and campaign, she has become an icon for many youths around the world to act in favor of social causes.
In the end, youth participation in politics is essential for a vibrant and inclusive political system. For this, established political parties and leaders must work towards creating a conducive environment for youths to enter into politics. At the same time, youth groups should also put efforts from their end.
