‘Translation Seminar’ organized in Kathmandu

Nepal Academy, in collaboration with the Translators Society Nepal, organized a ‘Translation Seminar’ in Devkota Hall of the Academy on Friday.

Vice-Chancellor Bimal Krishna Shrestha inaugurated the program by reciting the banner of the seminar. He said that translation is the knowledge and communication of two-dimensional languages. Focusing on the need for translation in local languages, which plays an important role in understanding and assimilating folk language, literature, narration, history, culture, and originality, he emphasized that some famous books have been translated by the Nepal Academy and added that more such works will be published.

In the symposium, Dr. Balaram Adhikari, also the chair of Translators Society Nepal, presented a paper on ‘The Language of Translation: Theoretical Debate and Practice’. In the paper, the textual and structural levels of language and the validity of the research were explained. 

Praising the paper presented in the program, Rajan Joshi, a translator, described Dr. Adhikari as the beacon of light for newcomer translators. Commenting on the paper presented at the program, Joshi said that the translation should not be cumbersome. “The language of translation should be simple and understandable. The originality and meaning of the translated works of any creator should not die.”

Presiding over the program, Hansawati Kurmi the Head of Literature (Translation) Department of the Academy, said that there is a misconception among people regarding translation as an easy task without knowing the language. “It is a technical genre. The Nepal Academy will gradually address the challenges arising from translation. The questions and inquiries related to this will be resolved through discussion and debate.”

An open discussion was also held where the experts and participants discussed about the challenges that exists in t he field of translation and need to find a path to overcome the challenges.
