Kathmandu: Minister of Labor, Employment and Social Security DP Aryal has asked the global leaders to urgently address the issue of reducing climate change impacts on people and the planet. He raised this issue while addressing the 112th session of the International Labor Conference in Geneva on Wednesday. “Representing a nation that is at the forefront of the climate change impacts, I call on the global leaders to realize the urgency of reducing climate change impacts on people and planet,” Aryal said, adding “As Nepal approaches six decades of affiliation with the ILO, I take this opportunity to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to promoting social justice.”
While thanking the member states of International Labor Organization (ILO) for recognizing Nepal’s efforts and electing Nepal to the governing body, the minister spoke about the imperative of better integrating socio-economic policies that recognize the essence of diverse work relationships.
He also spoke about Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Social Security’s recently launched flagship Shramadhan Project which encapsulates the essence of providing solution to every labor-related problem. “This project aspires to provide a comprehensive, one-stop solution for the labor journey of every Nepali citizen. Another cornerstone of our efforts is the formalization of informal economic units and workers,” he said. He also informed the global leaders that a tripartite consensus has been reached on the plan to ratify nine ILO conventions in Nepal. “We are currently focusing on ratifying Convention Number 87 on Freedom of Association, Convention Number 81 on Labour Inspection, and the 2014 Protocol to the Forced Labour Convention,” he said. “Nepal recognizes the importance of translating ratification into the progressive implementation of international labor standards. We acknowledge the recommendation to seek technical assistance from the International Labour Office, as expressed in the Committee of Experts’ Report on the Application of Conventions and Recommendations.”
Nepal is collaborating closely with the ILO, other UN agencies, and the European Union on Convention No. 111 through the “Empowered Women, Prosperous Nepal” program. Nepal’s president Ramchandra Poudel is scheduled to address the inaugural forum of the Global Coalition for social Justice here in Geneva on Thursday.
Minister Aryal invited all concerned stakeholders to the “Shramadhan Ministerial Conclave”, which Nepal plans to host by the end of 2024. “I eagerly anticipate welcoming many of you to our beautiful country to discuss our progress and collaboratively create a roadmap toward achieving lasting peace through social justice,” he said. “I believe that we can have very significant discussions on various labour issues including the impact of climate change when we meet in Nepal.”
